THE PROBLEM

Shipping routes get buried.

Posting the same route in Facebook groups, waiting for replies and hoping the right traveler happens to scroll past it at the right moment is still how many overlanders search for a shipping match.

A post can disappear quickly. The person travelling your way may be looking earlier, from another country or inside a community you never joined.

Container Buddy is for the discovery step: making a route visible long enough for another traveler with compatible plans to find it.

THE SOLUTION

Give your route a place to be found.

Create a free Container Buddy listing in Add Listing with up to three possible departure regions, a destination, an approximate shipping window and vehicle type. Then browse routes on the TRADEL map from travelers who may be heading in a similar direction.

A possible match does not need to be identical from the first message. A nearby departure region, a similar destination or an overlapping month can be enough to start talking.

Unlike a temporary social post, a TRADEL listing stays connected to your route. You can update it when plans change, share it in the travel networks you already use and remove it once everything is arranged.

TRADEL does not replace a shipping provider. It helps travelers find each other before they contact one.

HOW IT WORKS

Three steps. One clearer route.

Post early, even before everything is fixed.

Use Add Listing to share up to three possible departure regions, your destination, rough month or time window and vehicle type. Make clear whether you are looking for a match or have space available. Mention how flexible your route and timing are, and whether you have already spoken with a shipping provider.

Example listing titles

Looking for a Container Buddy · Europe to South America · August to September · 4x4 Container Space Available · Panama to Colombia · October Window · Motorcycle or Small Vehicle Flexible Shipping Match · Australia to Europe · Autumn · Campervan

Browse routes and start the conversation.

Use the TRADEL Browse Map to look for travelers heading in a similar direction. When a route and timing appear to overlap, compare your preferred departure and arrival points, vehicle type and flexibility directly. Keep passport details, registration documents, VIN numbers, payment information and booking documents private.

Let a provider confirm the final option.

A possible match is the start of the process, not the booking. Contact shipping providers together, ask what is possible for your route and agree how you will handle changes before anyone commits.

Before a commitment, be clear about who will speak with the provider, how you will stay in contact and what happens if one person changes plans. The provider should confirm the final arrangement and the details needed for a quote or booking.

FAQ

Container Buddy questions, answered.

Practical answers before you plan a shared shipping route.

What is a Container Buddy?

A Container Buddy is another traveler whose vehicle shipping route and rough timing overlap with yours. You may be looking for space or have space available for another vehicle or travel gear. TRADEL helps those routes become easier to discover.

When should I post my Container Buddy route?

Post once you know the likely direction and rough time window. You can add up to three possible departure regions, update the listing when plans move and remove it once shipping is arranged.

Can I post if I already have container space available?

Yes. Make it clear in the title, then include the likely departure region, destination, timing and vehicle type so a potential match can recognise the route quickly.

How are shared container shipping costs handled?

There is no universal split. Ask the provider for an itemised quote and agree the arrangement directly with your match. Freight may be split by floor space or volume, while some port-related fees are billed per vehicle. TRADEL does not set prices or process payments.

Can different vehicles share a shipping container?

Possibly. Physical fit, route requirements and the shipping provider decide whether a motorcycle, car, 4x4 or camper can travel together. Confirm the final option before booking.

What happens if my Container Buddy changes plans?

Since a cancellation can increase costs for the remaining traveler, discuss timing changes and cancellation expectations before either person commits. Update the listing if plans move and confirm next steps directly with the provider.

What if I do not find a Container Buddy?

Keep the route visible, update it as plans move and explore solo options with providers in parallel. You can also share your TRADEL listing in the travel groups and networks you already use. A match cannot be guaranteed, but someone may begin planning the same crossing later.

Does TRADEL organise vehicle shipping?

No. TRADEL helps travelers discover possible matches. Provider choice, quotes, contracts, payments, insurance, documents and final transport arrangements remain between travelers and their chosen provider.

MAKE THE ROUTE VISIBLE

Post early. The right match may already be out there.

Whether you are looking for container space or may have space available, a clear route gives another traveler something real to discover.
